Shirley Jean Hale, 87, of Cullman, Alabama, passed away on August 13, 2025, at Cullman
Regional Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born in Cullman
on July 7, 1938, to the late James Matthew Burgess and Ezma Black Burgess.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Faye Marlin and Nell Robinson; and her
son, David Hale. She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Warren Hale; children,
James Kugler (Sherri), John Kugler (Hope), Angela Miller (Jimmy Jones), and Greg Hale;
grandchildren, Kristy Patterson (Brent), Karla Campbell (Jordan), Josh Kugler, Nathan Hale
(Alicia) Kerri Hardin (Eric), Natasha Miller Thomas (Colt), and Wesley Miller; and 17 great-
grandchildren, each of whom she cherished deeply.
A 1956 graduate of West Point High School, Shirley went on to attend Cullman College and St.
Bernard College, earning her teaching degree in 1974. She retired from the Cullman County
School System after 25 years of dedicated service, shaping countless young lives.
In her later years, Shirley and Warren built and opened Cullman Campground, which became not
just a business, but a home for them and many others. There, she shared her love for people and
animals every day. Above all, Shirley will be remembered as a loving and committed wife,
mother, grandmother, and the best "Granny" anyone could have.
A funeral service will be held at East Side Baptist Church on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 1:00
p.m., with visitation from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. East Side Baptist Church is located at 1111
3 rd street SE Cullman Al 35055. A burial service will follow at Jones Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Keith Gorman
