Nelda Jean “Granny” Monk passed away on Monday September 21, 2026 at her family homestead at the age of 88. She was born on January 24, 1938 to Dwight and Gertrude Moody in Cullman, AL

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 54 years Rev. Bill Monk, a daughter-in-law Detra Monk, and a brother Bobby Moody and his wife Mary.

She is survived by her two sons Nicky (Frances) Monk, and Rev. Nathan Paul Monk. She is also survived by three grandchildren Stacy (Daniel) McCabe, Matt (Mary) Monk, and Austin (Tiffany) Monk and 11 great-grandchildren Jesse Monk, Zachary McCabe, Lilly Monk, Jacob McCabe, Annabella Monk, Grayson Monk, Eli Monk, Caleb Monk, Luke McCabe, and Liza Monk along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Granny was a 1956 graduate of Fairview High School and served as a faithful wife and mother for many years. But her most cherished roles were those as Granny to her three grandkids and spouses and Granny Great to her 11 great-grandchildren. She lived to spoil them with ice cream, chocolate, and Diet Mountain Dew as well as her special chocolate chip cookies. She always loved to encourage them and write them letters and stories for them. While she was Granny to her grandkids and Granny Great to her great grandkids, her caring spirit and concern for others were experienced by many in her church and community. She was a faithful pastor's wife for thirty five years serving alongside her husband in seven churches in Cullman, Blount, and Lawrence Counties. They were faithful supporters and members of the First Congregational Methodist Church denomination serving as delegates to the District, Annual, and General conferences and supporting many ministries such as Camp Sonrise, a summer camp for youth and children. Granny always encouraged family and friends to read their Bibles and learn about the Lord. In fact, she started Vacation Bible School in several churches she attended. She also had a talent for writing that she used to share her faith as well as her thoughts and prayers to God. She combined this and her love for the Bible to write material for Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for the First Congregational Methodist Church. She also wrote a monthly article for The Watchman the newsletter for the First Congregational Methodist Church for over 12 years. These articles were compiled into a two volume devotional book that was sold to support the ministries of the First Congregational Methodist Church. Following her husband’s death in 2011, Granny continued to love and encourage her family in the Lord and in their endeavors while also looking for ways to serve and minister to others. She lived at the Neighborhood assisted living facility for four years, using that time to encourage the residents and staff through listening to their stories and by coloring pages that decorated the rooms and hallways of the facility. She loved the community of Simcoe where she was born and grew up, always returning to her family’s land, which is where she lived her final years.

Viewing and funeral Services will be on Saturday September 26 at Cullman Funeral Home with interment at Mt. Olive Bible Based Fellowship on County Road 747 in Simcoe.  The visitation will be from 12-2 p.m. and the service will begin at 2 p.m. Officiating will be Matthew Monk, Daniel McCabe and Caleb Monk.
