Laura Elizabeth
Doss
May 1, 1987 – June 13, 2023
Beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend Laura Elizabeth Doss, 36, passed away on
Tuesday, June 13, 2023, surrounded by the immense love of her family.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, at First United Methodist Church in Cullman.
Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. Abby Prevost will officiate the service.
Born on May 1, 1987, to Annette Lee King and Terry Leon McHan, Laura was a friend to all, a worldwide
traveler and adventurer, a protector of her loved ones and a lover of life.
A natural athlete, Laura played basketball, volleyball, soccer and softball, and swam, during her time in
school. After her graduation from Cullman High School in 2005, Laura attended the University of
Alabama as a member of the prestigious Blount Scholars Program. In her first few days at the university,
Laura met her treasured husband Gavin Doss when they both attended the wrong math class. The pair
were inseparable from that day in the fall of 2005 forward.
Laura earned her degree in German and wed Gavin as they began their married adventure. The young
couple built a life they loved with many travels and escapades. The Dosses' favorite and most valued
adventure was becoming parents to their adored Pierson and Adelaide. Adding their son and daughter
to their shared experiences, the family spent as much time as possible together outdoors, hiking,
swimming and exploring God's beautiful world.
Laura received her master's degree in counseling from the Adams State University online program while
Gavin was serving in the U.S. Army. In 2017 the family returned to Cullman and Laura joined her mother
as a partner at Cullman Family Counseling. In a very short time, Laura earned a reputation as an effective
and empathetic therapist who was well loved and trusted by her clients and the community.
As a mother, Laura's primary goal was to keep her children protected. As their guardian angel, she is
afforded the opportunity to watch over her precious Pierson and Adelaide as they continue to grow.
Welcoming Laura to Heaven is her cherished Gee-Gee, Geneva King, and grandfather, Harold King;
grandparents, James and Vera McHan; and her sister-in-law Ana Doss.
Holding Laura's memory in their hearts is her mother, Annette King; father, Terry McHan; her husband
of 13 years, Gavin Doss; son, Pierson Doss, daughter, Adelaide Doss; parents in love, Phillip and Carolyn
Doss; sisters, Taylor McHan and Sarah Grace Jordan; brothers-in-love, Chris Short and Preston Jordan;
nieces, Madison Jordan, upcoming Naomi Elizabeth Jordan and Kaya Short-McHan; nephew Karim Short-
McHan; foreign exchange family in Darmstadt, Germany, Ulf, Claudia, Lucas, Lena and Lars Decker; and a
community of extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made for the education of Pierson and Adelaide Doss at Merchants
Bank, a division of SouthPoint Bank, with Phillip Doss as the guardian.
